All healthcare professionals require clinical examination skills to accurately assess patients of all ages and inform their healthcare journey. Caring for adults in community and primary care is influenced by multiple complex factors and demands skilled assessment and management. This stand-alone advanced professional development course offered by the University of Bolton will help develop your clinical examination skills in adults with acute and long-term conditions.Our expert team will guide you through taking a history in a systematic and organised way so that you can distinguish normal from abnormal pathology, identify how acute the episode is, who to refer the case on to and assess the level of urgency. You'll learn how to identify red flags, make sense of your findings, and link them to specific disease processes to aid in the diagnosis of ill health.
We'll support you in developing advanced communication skills. You'll learn to assess a range of systems relevant to community and primary care nursing practice, including (but not limited to) the abdominal, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and integumentary systems. We'll also explore the national and local drivers of integrated working and managing individuals presenting with acute and long-term conditions in community and primary care settings.

Entry Requirements
- You must have an appropriate health and social care related qualification; for example, registered nurse, nursing associate, allied health professional, or paramedic.
- It is preferable for you to have current employment in a community setting or general practice to fulfil the practice element of this course.
- You may be required to attend an interview and/or provide a portfolio of work.

Home/EU Fees
Home students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Home fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.
International Fees
Overseas students starting this course in the first year will be required to pay a Overseas fee of £800 for the academic year 2024/25.

Teaching & Assessment
This advanced professional development course focuses on building your knowledge and understanding of practical examination skills. Lectures are supplemented with practical sessions where you learn the specific skills required for each system discussed during the course. The practical aspects will involve developing clinical examination skills possibly using mannequins, peers and, in some cases, service users in our community simulation suite. We offer a safe and supportive environment where you can develop your clinical examination skills under the supervision of our experienced team.
As well as lectures and tutorials, a range of web-based resources will be made available to you via Moodle, the University's virtual learning environment, to aid you in achieving the knowledge requirement identified. E-learning is also provided via Moodle to enable you to undertake further study in a place and at a time that is convenient for you. This programme adopts a blended learning and teaching style, including online delivery and engagement where appropriate.
Formative assessment supports your learning but does not contribute to your final mark. You'll receive feedback from your tutors and peers that allows you to reflect on your progress and identify what you are doing well and where you may need extra help. Summative assessment tests your achievement of the intended learning outcomes for the course and determines your final mark. For this course, it will involve a written case review and objective structured clinical examinations to assess your knowledge of the systems and findings and apply these in a range of clinical situations.
